I think that new media refers to the ever-changing digital and computer language that is used to create every aspect of what can be seen and articulated on (but not limited to)the computer, television, and/or cinematic screen. New media is related to technology, and can be multimodal (meaning that it can be audio, visual, and/or textual).
I was watching the news this morning and saw the new issue of Esquire magazine. The cover has a digital screen on it, and I thought it really went well with our topic. I wonder, is this going to become more common for magazines? It will be interesting to watch.

I would agree with your definition.
I found your inquiry about Esquire magazine interesting. I think that it is very exciting to see that type of technology starting to become more prevalent. I read a little bit about it and it seems that it was really expensive for them to do. They are only doing a limited number of them. It might become something that magazines move to in the future if the cost were to go down. But it is definitely cool.
The magazine cover sounds really cool. I'll be googling it in a second.
I notice that you say that new media can be multimodal. Can you think of an instance where new media is not multimodal?
I am also wondering about the importance of interactivity to new media. It seems that much of the potential power of new media is the ability to redistribute power among producers and consumers of multimodal texts.
I'm going to Barnes and Noble to look for a copy of this. What an interesting example to think about in terms of new media. While it appears to have the multimodal and technical elements of new media, I wonder about how will function in an interactive sense. Will it "respond" in someway to readers/users or will it function like an electronic billboard, simply displaying information (though obviously in a cool way)?
Jen,
I've spent the last two days trying to think of an exapmle of new media not being multimodal, and could not. So, I need to alter my definition by saying that new media is multimodal.
After class discussion the other night, I also agree that new media has an interactive aspect to it, which I would also add to my definition.
